Overview
During the renovation of old production lines, the most common request from buyers is not to "replace the entire line with a new one", but "some models have been discontinued and cannot be found. Do I need to replace peripheral components as well?"
The key to this type of transformation is to first conduct an "inventory of discontinued models" and then decide on the scope of replacement to avoid discovering new problems while making changes.
Retrofit Steps
- Step 1: Take an site inventory, record the existing models, nameplate photos, and year of use in the cabinet, and prioritize whether production has been discontinued.
- Step 2: Classification processing - For those that have been discontinued but have official successor models, the successor models can be prioritized for migration, but the installation dimensions, terminal blocks, parameters, communication and software compatibility still need to be checked, and 1:1 plug-and-play replacement cannot be defaulted; for those that have been discontinued and have no direct successor models, they need to be reselected according to the parameters, paying attention to the differences in installation dimensions and wiring methods; those that have not been discontinued but have significantly lagging performance, can be upgraded together with the transformation window to reduce the risk of subsequent secondary shutdowns.
- Step 3: Check the interface compatibility to confirm whether the installation holes, wiring terminals, and communication protocols of the new and legacy part numbers are compatible to avoid "the model is bought correctly but cannot be installed in the original cabinet".
- Step 4: Spare parts reserve strategy. During transformation, it is recommended to reserve 1–2 sets of general spare parts for key circuits simultaneously to shorten future downtime.

Common Pitfalls
Only a single damaged component is replaced, without considering that other components of the same batch in the cabinet may have reached the end of their life.
Replace directly with a model with similar parameters but different wiring definitions. The signals do not match until site debugging.
After the transformation, the drawings and nameplates were not updated simultaneously, laying hidden dangers for the next maintenance.
